Act III Doll's House- The ending

Act III

1O YEARS LATER

(Nora enters the trudging slowly to the fireplace. She takes off her fur coat and places on Torvalds’ old working table, and she begins to speak to herself.

Nora: My! I have not been here in years (looks around the office which is piled with papers) and of course the office is filled with papers and he says “ I am the messy little squirrel.

(While Nora is looking around the office, she spots a letter with the name Helmer and picks it up abruptly).

Nora (she glares at the letter with a sight of interest and reads): A Will? Of a million dollars? Torvald has already enough money. Why does on God’s name does someone give more mmm.. it must be…Dr. Frank, that poor old man.

The door opens and Mrs. Linde & Krogstad enter the office with their son Bruno.

Mrs. Linde: Good day Nora!

Nora: Well, hello Christine! Nice to see you and your beautiful son today.

Mrs. Linde: (pushes Bruno closes to Nori): Say thank you to Nora, Bruno.

Bruno: Thank you N…Nora.

Nora:  You’re welcome (Nora then faces Krogstad and says): And, hello to you Krostad. How may your new job as a city manager of the bank be up in NY?

Krostad: May I say it is going well. And may I say how about you at your new macarron shop. I heard that those macarrons taste as if they were straight from Paris, France.

Nora: (Laughs in delight) Yes, it is going well. My store might actually move to France next winter. And I want you to take my children there with me just for a visit. That is why I am here.

Mrs. Linde: And how long has it been since you saw your children?

Nora: It has been 10 years already…. I have not seen my children for many years since I….. left Helmer.

( A door opens and a young man enters the office)

Nora’s child: Mother?(shouts in delight) Mother! Oh my it’s been years since I last saw you.

Nora: (comes up to hug her son) My son, how are you?

Nora’s son: I’m doing well mother. I heard about your famous macaroon shop is moving to Paris,  France. Is it true?

Nora: Yes, it is. And it would be wonderful if you came with me.

Nora’s son: Why of course I would go…more in the world..

Krogstad: (in a jokingly way) Take me with you.

Mrs.Linde: Krogstad!

Nora’s son: No, it’s fine miss… umm you look familiar? May I say… sorry but what may your name be?

Mrs.Linde: You may not remember me but I’ve been your mother’s best friend for years. My name is Christine ( she places her arms around Krogstad’s hip) and this is my husband Krogstad.

Krigstad: Nice to meet you sir.

Nora’s son: Nice to meet you too (looks down at Bruno and smiles) and who may this little brave soldier be?

Bruno: My name is Bruno.

Nora’s son: Hello Bruno. How are you?

Bruno: Good (looks up at Mrs.Linde) Mommy I’m bored.

Mrs.Linde: why don't you go head upstairs to one of the rooms ok. Mommy will call you down when its time to go ok.

Bruno: Ok mommy.

(Bruno heads upstairs)

Mrs.Linde: (looks straight at Nora’s son) Umm.. I apologize but do you have any water?

Nora’s son: Well, of course. There is water in the kitchen and cups are up in the cabinet.

Mrs.Linde: Thank you. Come along Krogstad.

(Mrs.Linde and Krogstad leave the office)

Nora: so… How is your sister doing. Is she fine?

Nora’s son: Yes I must say she is doing well. She is almost done with college and might want to move to Massachusetts to get a job.

Nora: That sounds wonderful. I remember when you two where little and your sister would run around the yard and you would try to chase her. And your father would join in and say “come here little squirrels”.

Nora’s son: (he stops smiling) yes… father…

(the lights turn down a little and everything is all quiet)

Nora’s son: It’s been pretty hard I may say…

Nora: What do you mean?

Nora’s son: You don't know ? Helmer is dead .

Nora: What? How?

Nora’s son: (a sudden clash and scream of Bruno is heard upstairs. Nora, her son, Krogstad and Mrs.Linde run stairs and find Bruno on the floor and next to him is a doll's house).

Mrs.Linde: My dear Bruno, are you ok?

Bruno: Yes mommy. I was just trying to grab that box that was inside the house but it fell on me. I’m sorry, but I just wanted to see what was inside the box.

(Mrs. Linde carries Bruno up and examines his face to check if there are any bruises form the fall)

Nora: Whose doll’s house is that?

Nora’s son: Oh! It’s dad… for some reason, he built that doll house every night. I don't know why. And, that box, he wanted me to give it to you but…

(Nora opens the box)

Nora: (her eye widen and is in shock)

Nora’s son: What is it mom?

Nora: (takes out the item form the box) It's a doll…

ACT II The Dolls House

 Many things are happening in Act II of the “The Dolls House”. In the beginning of the act, Nora is freaking out about the idea of Krogstad telling Helmer about the Forge that she has committed back in Italy. Trying to suppress the crime that she committed, Nora asks Helmer if she can just give Krogstad a chance to keep his job. (it is good for Nora to ask Helmer this because Krogstad will then decide not to tell Helmer about the secret if he gets his job back). Helmer denies Noras request for Korgstad getting his job back for 3 reasons. The first reason why he wants to fire him is because since Helmer was a kid, he did not like Krogstad as a friend. Second, Krogstad does not give that much respect for him (a good example of this is that Krogstad would call Helmer by his first name Tarvald instead of Mr. Helmer which is more respectful). And third, Krogstad’s past isn’t so good of a positive outlook on him because Krogstad committed a forge in the past. Nora then gives Helmer an attitude, which upsets him and then makes him send the letter to Krogstad explaining that he is fired.

The author shows that Helmer has a lot of pride and that he is unperturbed about other people’s problems. After Helmer leaves the room, Dr. Frank enters the room to tell Nora that he will soon die because of his sickness. This conversation gives Nora an idea. Nora decides to flirt with Dr. Frank because she wants to then ask him for money.  Nora’s plan was to use this money to pay Krogstad back the money she owned him. Dr. Frank then confessed his love to Nora, which disturbed her so she decided not to go with the plan. Dr. Frank leaves and Krogstad enters the room to talk to Nora about the job that he just lost and to tell her what he will tell Helmer about Nora’s crime if he doesn't get his job back and a promotion. Nora denies Krogstad’s request and says that she will commit suicide. Mrs. Lindes tries to help Nora by convincing Krogstad into not telling Helmer the truth. A reason why Mrs. Linde decides to help is because she knows how to deal with Krogstad because she had a relationship with him before. Things are about to get spicy like a bowl of chilly in the next Act. IF YOU WERE NORA, WOULD YOU PUT YOUR LIFE IN DANGER BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION OR WOULD YOU LIVE AND GET ON WITH THE TRUTH?

Act I " A Dolls House"

In Act I of “ A Dolls House”, the author, Ibsen, shows how life was like for the character back then and what they went through (such as relationships, family struggles, antifeminism and most importantly faith, which is the main plot of the story) which reflects to our generation too. A good example of a person who went through the situation listed above is Nora. In the beginning of Act I, Nora eats the Macaroons silently so her husband, Torvald Helmer wouldn't catch her. “ Hasn't Miss sweet tooth been breaking the rules in town…No Torvalds.”?  The author foreshadows these false statements made by Nora by using the Macaroons as a symbol of her lies, such as Nora’s job and also the forge that Nora did back in Italy when Helmer was sick. The reason why Nora has not told Helmer her secrets is because it will ruin their relationship, Nora may go through retribution, lose her house, and she simply doesn't want to embarrass Helmer. Helmer in the play is very disreputable to Nora. He is antifeminist, which means that he is incredulous that women should have equal powers as men do and believes that women are dumb. Similarly, when Helmer calls Nora these names, it signifies stupid, crazy and silly showing that Nora is frivolous to him. “Is it my little squirrel bustling about?”

 Nora is afraid of life and herself because of the two hidden secrets that might just unfold if krogstad blackmails her about the forge. What do you think Nora should do? Should she leave her husband, children, home and the macaroons behind her and move somewhere else far away to forget about the problem. Or, should she face excruciating reproach, which will ruin her relationship with her husband.

Henrik Ibsen

           Norway is known for having many great things: skiing, coffee, Fjords, Elk,vikings, WAFFLES (MMMM WAFLES) and most significantly famous writers like Henrik Idsen.  He was born in Skien, Norway on March 20, 1828. Ibsen is known for writing poems and playwrights, and directing plays. This man is considered "the father" of modern theatre and also the greatest playwright writer in history.
        When Idsen was born, his family went through difficult financial problems and this caused his father to be depressed. As a teenager,  Idsen had to leave school. His family moved and he had to take a job as an apprentice in a pharmacy. During this time of his life, he started to write plays. Idsen then became a father of a child with a servant at the age of 18, so he had to be responsible financially for a child that he never met. In 1850 Idsen moved again(this time to Olson) because he wanted to study at a University. He tried many times to be accepted to the university, but he failed. So,  he stopped thinking about university and decided to write plays such as,  Ghosts, Hedda Gabler, The Dolls house(AYYYY) and many other plays.
      In a Bergen theatre (located in Norway), Idsen worked as a producer, director and writer of about 145 plays. Idsen married a women by the name of Suzzanah Thorsen, and he had a son named Sigurd He left the wife because of financial problems. Idsen died on may 23, 1906 in his home in Oslo, Norway. While his childhood and teenage years were difficult, at the end he did was he was best at and what he enjoyed the most: writing plays.
